Responding to a user’s inquiry about the arrival of ads on Threads, Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, clarified the company’s approach. He stated, “Our approach will be the same as all our other products: make the product work well first, then see if we can get it on a clear path to 1 billion people, and only then think about monetization at that point.”

Although traditional advertising is not currently planned for Threads, social media content monetization extends beyond that. Marketers can utilize the platform for sponsored content and influencer marketing even before the introduction of a full-fledged advertising program. Instagram, a sister platform to Threads, is actively working on making its branded content tools available on Threads as well. This development will enable marketers to experiment with paid promotion and influencer partnerships within the Threads app.

Currently, on Instagram, brand accounts must apply for eligibility to use these branded content tools. While it appears Threads may require a similar process, it’s important to note that requirements and eligibility criteria could change as the platform evolves.

Instagram’s branded content tools, already publicly accessible, provide insight into what can be expected on Threads. To ensure transparency, Instagram requires sponsored posts to be clearly labeled, informing users that they are viewing paid content. This includes posts where influencers have received compensation or have been provided products or services for free. The branded content tools add a “Paid partnership with…” tag to indicate sponsored content. Threads’ implementation of branded content will follow a similar approach.

As Threads by Meta looks to the future, the introduction of branded content tools will open up new opportunities for marketers to engage with the app’s growing user base. These tools will enable brands and influencers to collaborate seamlessly while maintaining transparency and authenticity. Stay tuned for further updates as Threads by Meta continues to enhance its offerings and explore avenues for meaningful monetization.
